This time, it's Cafferty's illegitimate son who was "six-packed" and killed, and Cafferty is calling in his chips from Rebus. Rebus has to cope with a backdrop of gun running, jailbreaks, left- and right-wing extremists, nationalists and other splinter groups who are spouting racist philosophies, and imported white-power fanatics who are perpetrating hate crimes.

I, too, was surprised to see John Hannah as Rebus. He is too young and does not match the character in the book. He does, however, do a good job and I liked the show very much.

Chances are you'll see less at least here in the United States about the violent actions of the Protestant Unionist forces. Yet there were clearly two sides in the Troubles. In Mortal Causes, the mystery begins with the title. Fortunately, Rankin explains it in an Author's Note at the outset. In Scottish slang, "mortal" can mean "drunk. Mortal Causes (Inspector John Rebus Series #6)
As in all the books, the other major "character" in the stories is the backdrop of Edinburgh and the landscape of Scotland, which is so wonderfully depicted by Rankin in the books. The story line moves through the cities , landmarks and weather of Scotland with great detail given to all aspects of the culture there. In the case of Rebus, though, it is the Rolling Stones and rock music that he enjoys with a glass of whisky.
Rebus is a very interesting antihero. A detective with a relentless drive to solve the mystery and we go along happily for the ride.
